About Mr Mandalia

Mr Mandalia is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where he has practised since 2009. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter and a founder member and immediate past President of the British Patellofemoral Society.

Clinical Practice

Mr Mandalia’s clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of contemporary knee surgery, with a particular emphasis on preserving, restoring and optimising the function of the natural knee wherever possible. His specialist expertise includes cartilage and meniscal restoration, including cartilage transplantation, osteochondral allograft transplantation and meniscal transplantation; complex realignment osteotomy; knee cap stabilisation and realignment surgery; sports-related knee injuries; and complex knee trauma.

He also performs partial and total knee replacement surgery, incorporating advanced technologies including robotic-assisted knee replacement, where appropriate.

As a tertiary referral surgeon, Mr Mandalia provides a highly specialised service for patients referred from across the South West. He receives referrals for complex cartilage, meniscal, patellofemoral and lower-limb alignment problems, providing specialist assessment and treatment for patients with challenging knee conditions that may require advanced reconstructive techniques.

Mr Mandalia also has extensive experience in the management of complex sports-related knee injuries in elite national and international athletes. For the past 18 years, he has served as Chief Knee Surgeon for South West sports teams, including Exeter Chiefs. In 2026, he also provided specialist knee surgical services as Chief Knee Surgeon for all Exeter-based international matches during the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Education, Leadership and Research

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Mandalia is actively involved in surgical education, professional leadership, research and innovation. He is the Course Convenor for the Exeter Knee Masterclass and contributes to a range of national and international surgical education programmes, including advanced knee arthroscopy and cadaveric training courses run by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

He has served on the Education Committees of both the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association and the British Indian Orthopaedic Society. He is a founder member and immediate past President of the British Patellofemoral Society and is also a member of the UK National Committee for cartilage regenerative procedures. His commitment to education and professional development has led to numerous invitations to lecture and present his work at national and international conferences.

Mr Mandalia has a strong and longstanding commitment to clinical research and innovation across the field of knee surgery. His research interests encompass cartilage transplantation, ACL reconstruction, osteotomy using 3D-printed patient-specific instrumentation and robotic-assisted knee replacement, among other areas of advanced knee reconstruction.

As Research Lead for the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit, Mr Mandalia has coordinated and led research programmes within the department and has served as Principal Investigator or Chief Investigator for a number of national and international research projects. His academic contribution to the field is reflected in more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and review articles, as well as contributions to book chapters.

Through his clinical practice, education and research, Mr Mandalia remains committed to advancing the understanding and treatment of knee conditions and to bringing evidence-based, innovative and technically advanced treatments to his patients.
